“You can’t buy Happiness but you can buy frozen yogurt, and that’s kind of the same thing.”
Frozen Yogurt (Fro-Yo) or fro yo is a relatively new product to most people. Save for those who live in close proximity to stores stocking the product, most others can't differentiate it from ice cream. However frozen yogurt or Fro Yo is as different from its icy counterpart as night and day and these distinctions give a good explanation as to why this seemingly ordinary dessert is such a big craze abroad.
Why Frozen Yogurt is better than Ice cream?
For a start, frozen yogurt as its name suggests is made from yogurt unlike ice cream which is made of cream. This means that fro yo has much less fat, up to 0%, while ice cream by definition must have at least 10% fat, and since the flavor of ice cream depends on its fat content, the higher the quality, the more the fat content. Gelato for example will have up to 20% fat content. Frozen yogurt is considered a health food, not just a snack or dessert for various reasons, one is because it contains probiotics, healthy bacteria that aid the body in digestion and boost the immune system by catalyzing the production of essential vitamins that keep the body fine tuned. Nutritionally, yogurt also trounces ice cream by far. Frozen yogurt contains carbohydrates, protein and vitamins, all in higher quantities than ice cream, and it also packs a healthy dose of calcium which aids in strengthening bones, keeping the heart in good shape, and also helps in losing weight.
Also, by virtue of its yogurt base, fro yo is good for people who are lactose intolerant unlike ice cream which is rich in lactose thus a no-no in cases of indigestion for both adults and kids. Diabetic patients can also have sugar free frozen yogurt because lactose (milk sugars) which is present in milk and ice cream, is broken down by the live cultures in yogurt making it healthy for diabetics. In the warm Indian weather, you will also find frozen yogurt more convenient as it melts and freezes at a higher temperature than ice cream due to the different structure of its yogurt base.
According to Robin Chatterjee, proprietor of Yogurt bay, a frozen yogurt store on Carter Road in Mumbai's Bandra Suburb, “It is not just a matter of novelty and taste, but making healthy choices in life, and since the Indian consumer today is informed and knows what he or she wants, selling my product to them is never difficult”.
Because of multiple benefits, frozen yogurt is not classified as a dessert despite its comparison here with ice cream; it is a health food that can be had at any time of the day.
